Ancient China had been male dominated and women were required to obey their fathers and husbands and were treated as bondservants. Throughout the rise of the Tang Dynasty  (618BC-765B) however reform had been made to the social system of that time and females had been granted unusual rights and freedoms. The country itself had undergone considerable development in a variety of areas such as philosophy, politics and culture.

Princess Pingyang was the daughter of the founding emperor of the Tang Dynasty. She was the third eldest of nineteen daughters and had eventually been married off to Chai Shao, the duke of Jujy. when the emperor, li yuan, had decided to rebel against the emperor of yang of Sui she had sent her husband to fight alongside her brothers, while she escaped to her family’s estate situated in the province of Huxian. It was there that she gained a following of thousands of men and persuaded multiple rebel leaders to join and fight alongside her. Leading the army she proceeded to attack and successfully capture the capital of Huxian. However despite her efforts the opposing army of the Sui regime failed to take the attack and the army seriously as it had been lead by a woman.

Over time she had acquired over 70,000 men in her army and had met up with Chai Shao and Li Shimin and their army as they had been commanding another wing of the emperor’s army. Pingyang had been recognized as a commanding general and her army had been given the name “Army of the Lady, “ and was able to set up headers alongside her husband. The emperor had declared his daughter as the new marshal, authorizing staff to serve at her command. When she had passed at the age of 23 she had been given a grand military funeral to recognize her efforts in the founding of the Tang Dynasty.

The Rise Of Women in Medicine

By: Khushman Sekhon

Over many years, women have been seen fighting for their rights in various areas of society, struggling to be seen as equals beside their male peers. Many are grateful for the sacrifices made by women of the past who have broken down the walls and barriers that had previously hindered young girls from reaching their goals. Although women are still a visible minority in today’s society, they have come together as a community to make huge strides in the medical field. However, many inequalities are still present within the workplace.

For so many years, women have been underrepresented in positions of power, yet  barriers are still present for female physicians in the twenty-first century. Women still have to overcome pay gaps, and stereotypes pose major challenges in various STEM fields.

A study from 2016 looked into the data collected through the Freedom of Information Act. Several state institutions took many factors such as age, specialty, and experience into consideration. The total difference between the salary of men and women was $50,000.

“The total difference between the salary of men and women was $50,000…”

Another study explained that females are paid nearly 30% less than their male colleagues. The pay gap is inexplicably large even though there has been emerging evidence that female doctors listen to patients longer, interrupt less, and provide more cost-effective and patient-centered care. This is associated with lower rates of hospitalization and mortality

Even if the number of women practicing medicine is increasing, there is an ongoing struggle to be taken seriously because of their gender. Women in medicine are constantly subject to negative stereotyping if they reject and refuse to adhere to the expectations of the people around them.

Women’s capabilities and knowledge are often overlooked in male-dominant specialties and tend to miss out on many opportunities.  The reason for this is that many people falsely conclude that a female physician is unable to complete tasks with the same candor and passion as her peers. This gender imbalance is a result of the unconscious judgement of women based on unhealthy standards. Today, more than 63% of medical school applicants are women, which is a drastic rise from the numbers recorded around 1995. Nevertheless, an equal rise of females as leaders is still awaited. For instance, in the Canadian Medical Association, there are twenty  men on the board with only six females.

“Today, more than 63% of medical school applicants are women…”

Even so, a gender shift is becoming more prominent within family medicine. In 2008, 28% of physicians were women, but the number has now risen to 41%. Women such as Dr. Gertrude Elion and Dr. Sisna Love have been trailblazers in the medical field, paving the way for younger female doctors and displaying to the world that women are capable of so much more than what society believes. The absence of gender equity is a real and prevalent issue everywhere, and it is time for it to be recognized and apprehended.

5:30 Am

vocal lofi hip hop radio - emotional/late night beats - YouTube

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen your face or heard your voice.

It’s been months since I’ve woken up to a “good morning beautiful text” and fallen asleep on the phone, while u went on making false promises about our future together.

You didn’t see me the way I saw myself-

You listened…

You cared …

You put on an act…

The master of your own selfish game.

I put our playlist on repeat and dance around the room,

In your favourite red dress,

Letting the sweet melodies fill my mind with memories of you.

It’s funny to think I stood by you even through the bad,

And now you’ve moved on, telling her about what we once had.

Does your mom still ask about me?

Did you eat today?

Do you miss me like I miss you?

Now I’m stuck sending you one text a time,

I know you’re by your phone,

So why won’t you hit my line?

We talked more when you were Intoxicated;

Inebriated,

Left me wondering about the extent of your sober thoughts.

You did me wrong but it felt right,

I should have left but I was tied down by you-

The chains, tight.

I screwed around and got attached to you,

Maybe that’s why, the sky seems so dark and blue.

I’m doing things we used to do hoping I’ll run Into you.

The stars that once lit the night sky we met beneath,

A dull reminder of you and me.

You said you needed love,

and claimed you wanted me,

But your actions spoke volumes;

Much louder than your words.

It’s 5:30 am, and I’m still not over you.

Summary:

The poem itself touches on subjects of heartbreak and teenage love. It guides the reader through the late night thoughts one may stumble across questioning their past relationship. The individual is reminiscent of their past relationship yet still holds feelings of resentment. I have written this poem primarily as a free verse poem with a few rhyming schemes to create a sense of cohesiveness between the ideas. I wanted to be able to get the true emotions of dying love across and the use of free verse allows the internal confusion associated with heartbreak, to be more prominent throughout the piece. The poem allows potential readers to relate in a variety of ways. I had drawn inspiration for this poem from many of my favourite pieces of music recently, and have incorporated a few lyrics within the piece from artists such as Summer Walker, Giveon and Ali Gatie as many of their songs resonate with the ideas represented in the poem, and when combined allow a feeling of musicality which is what I was striving for. The use of lines from specific pieces of music allow for a deeper meaning and bring the emotions to life.

Afraid…

I am scared.

Not of the past, and not of the future,

I am afraid of the present.

The present is what holds lost memories of the past, ones I had buried deep in the abyss-which is my mind.

Memories I had forgotten I had.

It is a tiny, yet large fragment of my tomorrow.

A stepping stone.

My now is what matters.

The most crucial lines of my story, written during my teenage years.

My chest; Fluttering butterflies searching for a way out.

My fingers; filled with a constant tingly sensation.

Both, reminders of my purpose, and reminders to never give up on my ambitions.

No longer able to hide from the possibilities of my future.

I need a running start.

I am scared of the present.

The music I once longed to hear, a tragic reminder of what I left behind.

Though the silence is filled with the roaring sound of my thoughts.

A new song.

A sweet melody,

One of growth, passion ,and dedication

One of new beginnings symbolizing the denouement of a chapter I had already written.

I am scared to grow up.

I want more from my life.

Dance with the possibilities of what I can become.

Hop on another roller coaster

But stay on this time.

Learn to be my own superhero in times of defeat,

No longer waiting to be saved.

Catch my dreams in the palms of my hands as I watch the ups and downs of life storm by.

I am petrified.

Summary:

This poem symbolizes new beginnings as a teenager, and the feelings of fearfulness and panic associated with the idea of growing up. Recently I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed in my grade 12 year of high school, as the external pressures of other’s expectations have started to become a bit of an overwhelming factor. I am now starting to realize the importance of my decisions in the present, and the impact they have on my future. Through this journey however I am willing to learn and grow from my experiences, and many mistakes. The piece as a whole is reminiscent of the current state of my life. I had also wanted to highlight my personal growth associated with the huge change, while still maintaining the common theme of the constant anxiety connected with that change. The choppy sentence structure symbolizes my thoughts and how they constantly jump from one place to another.
